As version 3 of the product becomes available, Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc’s Uxbridge-based UK subsidiary has decided to start actively marketing HayesConnect, the software package that enables users to share serial devices on an AppleTalk local area network. The product has been available in the US for some time, and Hayes in the UK has sold some copies to customers on request, but with the release of version 3, it will now be fully incorporated into the UK product line. HayesConnect effectively works by turning any nominated Apple Computer Inc Macintosh on the network into a server, enabling devices such as modems, printers and plotters connected to it to be shared by the other workstations. Enhancements included in this latest release are the ability to group devices into a single pool – represented on screen by one icon – for simplified management, and password security for the HayesConnect server. Also added is Activity Logging, and the ability to select servers and serial devices through a Chooser extension. The new version also supports Macintosh System 7, including AppleEvents and Balloon Help, and the Communications Toolbox. In the UK, the price for the latest HayesConnect release is UKP80.
