Harris transitions legacy FAA telecommunications microwave services in Alaska

Received FAA acceptance of the first two systems of a new terrestrial microwave network

By CBR Staff Writer

Harris Corp., working within the scope of its FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure program, has received Federal Aviation Administration acceptance of the first two systems of a new terrestrial microwave network. The first two systems, part of a 21-system network, are in Kenai and Anchorage, Alaska.

According to Harris, the systems are part of a seven-year $69m program in which Harris, working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is providing a new terrestrial microwave network that will provide assured communications services in areas where it is difficult to use traditional telecommunications lines.

The project began in November 2009, and is part of the FAA’s overall communications capabilities upgrade under the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) program.

John O’Sullivan, vice president of FAA programs for Harris, said: With the addition of the 21 microwave systems under the FTI umbrella, the FAA will be a step closer to achieving the FTI vision for high quality, cost-effective telecommunication services to support all FAA operational and mission support activities with integrated network and security management.
