Harris Corp is to double the size in the chip business by taking on the GE Solid State division of General Electric Co. GE has been trying to disengage from the semiconductor business ever since it acquired further interests when it bought RCA Corp a couple of years back. Core of the business to be bought by Harris – on undisclosed terms – is what is left of the RCA Solid State Electronics arm, but it looks as if other GE interests are in the deal: the business to go has 10,000 employees and annual sales of $550m. RCA went out on a limb with Silicon-On-Sapphire technology, but, just like Harris, its primary focus is CMOS.
