Following the launch of IBM’s 3174 terminal concentrator (CI No 1,170) and Memorex Telex’s 1174 series (1,181), Harris Corp’s Data Communications Division has come out with the first two models in its new SuperNet System. The System is built round the 80386 processor and as well as doing 3174 duty can also run local MS-DOS applications; the Model 20 supports local area networks of 16 to 32 users in addition to terminal users and providing up to 400Mb of internal storage, while the Model 30 supports a network of 32 to 64 users in addition to attached terminal users and has around 1Gb of internal storage. The system offers a gateway between Token Ring and Ethernet, up to four synchronous communications lines and supports up to 64 co-ax devices. Prices start at UKP19,000 to UKP40,000 and the Data Communications Division, undaunted by its own imminent sale, expects to install over 200 throughout Europe in the next year.
