What are widgets?

They exist for both mobile and web, and TVs are also about to get their own.

By Joao Lima

A widget is an external application that can be added to a device as an app or to a web page as a piece of software.

Widgets are applications that could have different functions, but are usually solely intended to serve one purpose.

In web pages, web widgets are varied and can be anything from a weather information ‘window’ to a widget tracking the stock exchange.

The first web widget was created by Trivia Blitz in 1997 and was a game applet offered by uproar.com.

In the mobile space, a mobile widget has essentially the same function as a web widget.

However, while in a web page widgets are not seen as essential and are usually used to add that bit of information, widgets on mobile devices have become a ‘de facto’ technology to have.

Mobile widgets make navigation in the phone easier and faster.

As TVs also become the next computing interface, TV widgets are starting to show up to make watching TV a more interactive and smoother experience.
