Intel axes lack Lustre file systems and open sources features

Intel puts a stop to its Lustre file systems to replace it with a new Community edition.

By Hannah Williams

Intel has revealed that it will stop providing its Lustre file system brand releases,  instead transfering all its features to the open source community.

According to The Register, Trish Damkroger, Intel’s Vice President and General Manager for Technical Computing Initiative sent an email this week to partners and customers confirming the change.

Damkroger said: “Starting today, Intel will contribute all Lustre features and enhancements to the open source community. This will mean that we will no longer provide Intel-branded releases of Lustre, and instead align our efforts and support around the community release.

“These changes are designed to increase Intel’s involvement in the community and to accelerate technical innovation in Lustre. For the community as a whole this will mean easier access to the latest stable Lustre releases and an acceleration of the technical roadmap.”

Intel offers three of its Lustre editions, which include Enterprise, Foundation and Cloud. Each of the editions all includes unique offerings.

The Enterprise Edition provides large-scale, high bandwidth storage with the power and scalability of Lustre, whilst the Foundation Edition offers maximum speed and scale Lustre storage with support from Intel.

Lastly, the Cloud Edition provides maximised storage performance and cost-effectiveness with Intel’s cloud solution.

This will now become the Community Edition, which will still gain input from Intel based on individual releases.

“Intel will be heavily involved in producing the Lustre community releases and expects there to be the same high level of quality that customers have come to expect from the Intel-branded releases.

“Furthermore, Intel will be publishing community maintenance releases for a designated Long Term Stable (LTS) release so that users can easily access an up to date ‘latest and greatest,’” said Damkroger.

This LTS release Intel talks of will be offered as Lustre 2.10, due to be released in May 2017. The company is also expected to continue its support for Lustre.
