Huawei & Cardiff University partner for broadband R&D

Faster broadband speeds for the always-on era sets basis for R&D collaboration.

By Joao Lima

Huawei has entered a partnership with Cardiff University to work on two projects aimed at broadband innovations.

The collaborative effort was revealed by Huawei’s UK CEO, Gordon Luo, when speaking at the Forum on UK-China Innovation and Entrepreneurship, held in Cardiff and organised by the British Council.

The event was part of the third UK-China High-Level People-to-People Dialogue and the eighth UK-China Education Summit.

The company said the two projects will focus on technical innovations for high-speed broadband and that the main goal of the partnership is to reduce the overall energy consumption and operational costs of communication networks.

The venture will be undertaken in collaboration with Professors Johannes Benedickt and Paul Tasker from the School of Engineering at Cardiff University.

Professors Johannes Benedikt said: "Through our combined strengths in research and development we hope to provide more efficient communication for a wide range of users around the world."

Gordon Luo, Huawei UK CEO said: "Both of these projects have the potential to deliver technical breakthroughs that will improve the broadband experience of billions of people around the world when they use their smartphones to open an app or surf the web.

"We are also proud that this partnership with Cardiff extends our co-operation and investment with leading British universities, whose technical expertise is world-class."

Huawei added that the joint collaboration is part of Huawei’s long-term commitment to collaborating on R&D with a number of British universities, including the University of Surrey, Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge.

According to the Bristol and West of England China Bureau, more than 90,000 Chinese higher education students studied in the UK in the most recent academic year.

More than 250 UK-China joint programmes, institutes and campuses in China are operating at degree level and above.

China’s President Xi Jinping is due to make a state visit to the UK in October, the first in a decade by a Chinese leader.

The ties between the two countries have today been strengthened, as Chancellor George Osborne announced that the country will guarantee a £2 billion nuclear plant deal in which Chinese investment will play a key role.

Osborne said the deal will enable greater collaboration between the UK and China on the construction of nuclear plants.
