Google is reportedly working on a battery technology designed to power its consumer electronics and other hardware.
Sources familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal that a four-member team led by former Apple battery expert Dr. Ramesh Bhardwaj have started working on battery technology.
Previously, Dr. Bhardwaj hinted to industry executives about Google’s project, which includes at least 20 battery dependent applications including self-driving car, Google Glass, and monitoring device for healthcare industries.
According to reports, Dr. Bhardwaj’s group is planning to convert the present lithium-ion technology into cutting-edge solid-state batteries for consumer devices.
Back in February, he described the usage of solid-state, thin-film batteries for mobile devices that can be made thinner, bendable, and also implantable in the human body.
Google X research lab is not the only division working on powerful batteries, the company has also collaborated with Chicago-based AllCell Technologies to create powerful batteries for four hardware projects including Project Loon.
According to reports, tech giants including Apple, IBM and automaker Tesla are also working on technologies to produce a powerful battery.
