Nearly half of all the accounts on Twitter are inactive, new analysis of the site has found.
44% of the site’s 974 million existing accounts have never sent a tweet, according to a report from Twitter activity analysis firm Twopcharts.
Of the approximately 550 million accounts that have tweeted, just under half of those sent their last tweet more an year ago, and only 126 million accounts have sent any kind of tweet at any point in the past 30 days.
Twitter states that an account is active if the user logs in at least once a month, although a person does not have to tweet regularly to be considered a monthly active user. By this count, it claims to have had 241 million monthly active users during the last three months of 2013.
Twopcharts’ report also revealed that 30% of current Twitter accounts have sent between 1-10 tweets, while only 13% of the accounts have written at least 100 tweets.
About 542.1 million accounts are expected to have sent at least one tweet since they’ve been created, which reveals that just over half of the Twitter accounts have actively tried out the service.
During the past 30 days, about 23% of current accounts have used the social platform to place a Tweet, the report added.

Twitter did not comment on the data, saying only that the company doesn’t talk about third-party data related to its service.
