H Bollmann Manufacturers Ltd, HBM is to come out with its first terminals next month, offering two liquid crystal diode displays for DEC VT and Wang Laboratories environments. HBM has the DW1000 Workstation for DEC and Wang, and the 1010 Workstation for DEC: a further Tempest line for Wang is expected by the year end. Teddington, Middlesex-based HBM decided on liquid crystal technology for its security – the elimination of radiation emission is said to prevent eavesdropping – and health benefits; the public sector is one major target, with many local authorities barring pregnant women from using VDUs. The company will also look to security conscious applications, such as in law, finance and defence. Manufactured by the company in Burgess Hill, Sussex, the terminals will sell for around UKP1,600. The company is also working on a liquid crystal terminal for IBM network systems environments. HBM hopes that within a year, its terminals business will be its major earner, overtaking its present flagship Wang protocol converter business.
