Guoxin Telcom Ltd, the world’s largest pager service operator, is to launch web-based services for its 42.5 million subscribers. The Chinese state-owned company, which was recently transferred to the country’s second full-service telco China United Telecommunications Ltd (China Unicom), plans a package of services through its new web site.

The paging service, which still has very large market potential in China,

will continue to be our pillar business, said Ni Yifeng, Guoxin’s president, but we must also be involved in internet services. We hope to be a major internet service provider and internet content provider. Web paging will be available immediately to national pager and local users in more than a dozen cities and provinces, and to all customers by the end of the year. Subscribers will get email notification and be able to read their emails on pagers.
