GTE Corp faces a $1,500m lawsuit that could turn out to be serious, albeit not to the extent of fifteen hundred Gs: plaintiff is Home Shopping Network Inc of Clearwater, Florida, which offers goods for sale on phone-in TV shows, and al-leges that GTE installed and operated an Omni call-distribution telephone system that was so inadequate for the volume of calls generated – by April less than half of all calls were reaching operators – that it lost $500m in profits between 1986 and May 1987 when it threw out the GTE system and called in Rockwell International; perhaps the most serious allegation is that according to the suit, when finally presented with evidence that calls were not getting through, GTE representatives altered computer logs and other data to cover up the problem; according to the Wall Street Journal, GTE gave the impression it had expected the suit.
