Greenplum invites data warehousing at click of a button

Californian data warehousing vendor Greenplum Inc hopes to ramp up interest and adoption of its commercial open source data warehousing software by allowing customers to try out products and services from its new Bizgres Network customer website.

By CBR Staff Writer

The network will allows prospective customers to get their hands on downloadable version of Greenplum’s commercial Bizgres MPP open source data warehousing software, which the company launched last month, by simply registering on the site.

Customers can develop around the download software for free, but must pay when they put the warehouse into production.

The network also provide support services including a knowledge base and online technical support. The company has partnered with US global services firm iSmart Panache Inc to handle technical support.

Greenplum says this novel try before you buy deployment option is more cost-effective and less risky than traditional enterprise data warehousing solutions, thereby making it more accessible to companies of all sizes and IT budgets.

Greenplum’s MPP 2.1 data warehousing solution is built on top of the open source PostgreSQL database, which Greenplum is helping to nurture as a platform for enterprise-class data warehousing through the Bizgres project.

Officials at San Mateo-based Greenplum say that because its MPP system uses low-cost commodity servers from Dell, HP, Run or Rackable, it offers favorable price-performance over traditional high-end data warehousing solutions from IBM Corp, Oracle Corp and Teradata.

Customers can download MPP Bizgres at https://bgn.greenplum.com.
