The government’s hands-off position regarding the formation of a private sector non-profit corporation to oversee the internet’s domain name system was summed up by one of the authors’ of the white paper, Becky Burr, the senior internet policy advisor at the National Telecommunications and Information Agency. She said while the government will not make people sit down to get the corporation together, we will provide a room to help people get in the same room, but it’s a private process. The only way the government will be involved, says the white paper, is as a user of the internet. The paper recommends that the industry gets an interim version of the corporation together by September 30.
