Fresh from his roasting for having claimed credit for the internet, US vice-president Al Gore has invited another round of flames by declaring his AlGore2000.com campaign web site open source. Tech insiders displayed equal parts outrage and amusement. Is this a joke? Apparently not, remarked the San Jose Mercury News, which makes this another transcendently clumsy attempt to co-opt a newly popular buzzword and turn it to political advantage. Gore was also sharply criticized for inviting children to submit their email addresses and zip codes to the campaign, a practice frowned upon by internet privacy experts. That part of the site has since been changed.
