Google’s web analytics freebie suspended

Swamped by overwhelming demand for its free web analytics services offering, Google Inc has temporarily suspended further subscriptions until it finds a way of keeping up with the demand.

Users wishing to sign up for the service at Google’s web site are being met with a message informing them that extremely strong demand has forced the company to limit the number of new sign ups until it increases its capacity.

Mountain View, California-based Google hopes to resume subscriptions very shortly, according to a spokesman.

This is the second bump that Google’s hosted web analytics service has hit since its launch. Some users had complained of accessibility and performance issues.

It’s not clear whether the subscriber surge is being driven by the free tag or is a symptom of pent-up demand for web analytics in general.

Google had previously charged users $200 per month for the service, which is powered by web analytics software acquired from Urchin Software Inc in March this year.

The service is aimed at online advertisers, website owners and web publishers analyze their online transactional data to guide online marketing campaigns (banner ads, referral links, newsletters and search) and sharpen up their web site designs.
