Google’s Project Tango launches in UK

The 3D mapping tablet is priced at $512.

By CBR Staff Writer

Google’s 3D mapping tablet, Project Tango, is up for sale in the UK for the first time.

The device, which was initially rolled out last year, can map environments in 3D and navigates the physical world in the same way as humans.

Project Tango, with a 7-inch screen, infrared sensors and two back cameras, has been priced at $512. It works on several Android device platforms that run C, Java, and Unity.

Google is also making the development kit available for developers to come up with new apps on the tablet.

The technology recognises its surroundings using advanced computer vision, image processing, and special vision sensors to bring in a new kind of spatial perception.

Motion tracking will enable the device to understand position and orientation using custom sensors.

Tango product manager Larry Yang said that the best possible feature of the device is to create indoor mapping functionality.

Yang was quoted by the Guardian as saying: "We’ve seen developers build products where you can say ‘find me the Oreos’, and the device will give you an accurate map through a store to where they are kept – even with no GPS or signal at all."
