He joins seven other high profile members currently sitting on the board, including Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs, former US vice president Al Gore, and Genentech Inc CEO Arthur Levinson.

Apple is one of the companies in the world that I most admire, said Schmidt in a gushing statement. But one can’t help but think that the move is also motivated as an opportunity to take another stab at mutual rival Microsoft Corp.

Schmidt previously served as CEO of Novell Inc and chief technology officer at Sun Microsystems Inc before joining Mountain View, California-based Google in 2001.
