Gmail has had its chat service since February 2006. Google reported that this feature would currently not be available in Google’s own desktop instant messaging service Gtalk.

The feature, currently available only in English, can be accessed through the chat menu, located on the left hand side of the Gmail inbox. This menu will feature a ‘Sign into AIM’ option in its drop-down menu. AIM buddylist will appeal among the Gmail contact after signing in. Users will be able to use features like saving chat history and automatic sorting of friends by the frequency of communication as available in Gtalk, the company said.

According to comScore, AOL is the most popular instant messaging service in the US with a user base of 30.2 million, as of September 2007. New York Times has reported that with the integration of AIM with Gtalk, Google is aiming to reach out to a wider user base.
