OCR exam board chief Mark Dawe said using the internet use in exam rooms would be allowed in the near future and that it was inevitable students would be allowed search for answers on google.
Mr Dawe told the BBC’s Today programme "Surely when they learn in the classroom, everyone uses Google if there is a question."
"It is more about understanding what results you’re seeing rather than keeping all of that knowledge in your head, because that’s not how the modern world works."
He said GCSEs and A-Levels students should be allowed used the service limited time to conduct searches.
The BBC reported that The Campaign for Real Education ‘condemned the idea as "dumbing down".’
Mr Dawe said: "It’s about understanding the tools they have got available and how to utilise them.
He said that while unlikely to happen soon the move was ‘inevitable.’
