Google has partnered with Johnson & Johnson to develop innovative robotics tools to make surgeons smarter.

As per the strategic collaboration, Google’s life sciences division will work with Johnson & Johnson unit Ethicon to develop robotic-assisted surgical platforms which will help surgeons in the operation room.

The new platform will leverage the expertise of Jonhson and Johnson’s medical device technology as well as robotic systems, imaging and data analytics expertise.

The planned robotics will use artificial intelligence to help surgeons carry out minimally invasive surgery that uses technology to give surgeons greater control, access and accuracy during surgical procedures.

It claims to help in minimising trauma and scarring while helping patients speed up post-surgical healing.

Johnson & Johnson Global Surgery Group worldwide chairman Gary Pruden, "For more than 60 years, Ethicon has developed products and technologies that have transformed the way surgery is done."

"This collaboration with Google is another important step in our commitment to advancing surgical care, and together, we aim to put the best science, technology and surgical know-how in the hands of medical teams around the world."

Both the companies have not disclosed the financial details of the deal which is expected to close in the second quarter of 2015 after regulatory approval.

Alcon, the eye care division of Novartis, has recently entered into an agreement with Google to in-license its smart lens technology.

Alcon and Google will leverage each other’s expertise to develop smart lenses that would be used to monitor the wearers’ blood sugar level and help presbyopia patients with vision correction.
