Google opens first physical store in London

Search engine company to open a data centre in Dublin

Search engine company Google has opened its first real world store, Chromebook store, in a London branch of Currys and PC World.

Earlietr this year, Google unveiled cloud-based laptops running on its own operating system. The new ‘Chromezone’ shop, situated on London’s Tottenham Court Road, will be used by Google to sell the Chromebook.

Google said that people manning the store have been trainned about the Chromebook.

It said, "Specially trained Chromebook experts will be on hand to offer guidance and advice to shoppers", according to The Telegraph.

"We’ve put a great deal of thought into the design of this Chrome Zone," said Arvind Desikan, head of consumer marketing for Google in the UK and Ireland.

Meanwhile, the PA reported that Google is planning to open a new data centre in Dublin to run its search engine, Gmail and Google Maps services.

According to thereport, Google has already bought 11 acres of land and a building in the Profile Park in the west of the city in a 75 million euro investment.

Minister for Jobs Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton said, "The decision by Google, one of the most important multinational companies in Ireland, to locate a state of the art data centre in Dublin is an endorsement of our policies in this area, and a sign of what is possible if we continue our focus."

The project will create more than 200 jobs during the construction, and up to 30 full-time and contractor jobs once operational. Positions at the centre will include computer technicians, electrical and mechanical engineers, and catering and security staff.

The news comes a few days after Google announced that it will open a research hub in TechCity in London.
