Matt Brittin, newly appointed European lead at Google said the UK’s internet economy represents 12% of GDP and that the UK economy is net positive for digital exports.

Speaking on a panel at the preview to the International Festival for Business 2016, Brittin said the UK tech sector is being presented with a huge growth opportunity.

"Smaller businesses are agile and fast. When compared with large corporate, tech SME and start-up businesses are close to the customer. UK SME tech businesses can use digital platforms to gain traction and have a route to scale. We will see more of that in 2015," Brittin said.

There are many digital examples of growth with businesses gaining rapid access to markets of two billion people and global talent pools, he said.

The pace of business has been accelerated thanks to digital technology and business today is at the slowest it is ever likely to be.
