Google eBookstore launches in the UK

Over two million public domain ebooks for free across devices including smartphones and PCs

Search engine company Google has officially launched its scanned book service Google eBookstore in the UK.

Google Books is now officially available to British customers across devices including tablets, smartphones, PCs, laptops, netbooks, and e-readers.

Britons can now officially read scanned pages of books, choosing from over 20 different subjects and genres. They also have over two million public domain ebooks for free, including Jane Eyre and Moby Dick.

"Readers in the UK now have access to the world’s largest ebooks collection, with hundreds of thousands of ebooks for sale – from major UK publishers like Hachette, Random House and Penguin – as well as more than two million public domain ebooks for free," said Google.

The Google eBookstore launched in the US last December. Australian and Canadian stores are expected to follow soon.

The company revealed that users in the UK can also see a new version of the Android market. To read the books on Android phones, users need to have Android 2.1 or higher.

Google said that it has has signed agreements with large UK publishers, including Penguin and Hachette to sell their books.According to The Bookseller, Google will launch the eBookstore in non-English markets next year.
