Google has hinted at the arrival of Android 5.0 at this month’s Google I/O developer conference, not the initially expected Android 4.5.
The hint came as a tweet sent from Google’s account in relation to a World Cup feature. The image shows the system clock at 5:00.
What’s that got to do with anything? Well, since Android 2.3, Google has made a habit of using images of system clock times to tease consumers of what the next operating system version will be.
For example, go to the Google Play Store and the devices on show will all show the time set to 4:40, an indicator for the current version of Android 4.4.
There are many rumours floating around about what Google is set to announce at this year’s I/O conference. It may announce the successor to the Nexus 5, the Nexus 6. More Android Wear smartwatchs may be revealed, or perhaps the Nexus 8, an 8-inch successor to the Nexus 7 tablet, may be announced.
It is expected with the release of Android 5.0, Google will closer align the Android operating system, the Chrome browser, and its search functions. Following the trend of sweet-toothed Android namesakes, Android 5.0 will be named Android Lollipop.
