Google has restored its Gmail service after it was hit with a brief outage on Friday, affecting its global base of millions of users who experienced glitches when using the service.

In addition to normal users, enterprise customers using Gmail as part of their subscription to Google Apps were also hit with the outage.

Google VP Engineering Ben Treynor said, "The issue has been resolved, and we’re now focused on correcting the bug that caused the outage, as well as putting more checks and monitors in place to ensure that this kind of problem doesn’t happen again."

According to Google, the outage was mainly caused after an internal system encountered a software bug and the wrong configuration being sent to live services that caused user requests for data to be ignored.

Treynor added that most of its users who used logged-in services like Gmail, Google+, Calendar and Documents found they were unable to access those services for approximately 25 minutes.

"For about 10 percent of users, the problem persisted for as much as 30 minutes longer," the search major added.

"With services once again working normally, our work is now focused on (a) removing the source of failure that caused today’s outage, and (b) speeding up recovery when a problem does occur."
