Singapore electronics manufacturer Goldtron Ltd says it expects to begin volume production of its recently developed cellular telephone in May: the hand-held phone, Singapore’s first locally designed and developed cellular phone, is aimed at the low end of the market and expected to be one of the cheapest available; the company expects to produce about 50,000 this year – it has won regulatory approval for use in the US but a deal to distribute it there through an intermediary has been rescinded; the company also says that lack of demand for Digital Compact Cassette players developed by Philips Electronics NV means a factory built to make the tapes will switch to floppy disk media, with launch in June.
