If the Unix industry’s Motif and CDE Common Desktop Environment graphical user interface technologies are not developed beyond the current Release 2 (see separate story), what else might the Unix industry migrate to? One possibility is software developed by the Gnome Project. Gnome stands for GNU Network Object Model Environment, and the project intends to build a complete, user-friendly desktop based entirely on free software. A similar project is the KDE K Desktop Environment for the Linux operating system. Both are part of the OpenSource movement that includes Linux. Ironically, the Linux community was one of the fastest to move to Motif release 2, while commercial Unix vendors have spent 18 months getting the version onto the market.
