Globalfoundries and ARM team up for mid-range mobile processors

The collaboration will combine ARM's next-generation mobile processor and POP IP with GLOBALFOUNDRIES 28nm-SLP HKMG process application.

By CBR Staff Writer

Globalfoundries has unveiled the new POP technology offerings to optimise the ARM Cortex-A12 and Cortex-A7 processors for its 28nm-SLP High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) process technology.

ARM will collaborate with Globalfoundries to combine its next-generation mobile processor and POP IP with the 28nm-SLP HKMG process system to enhance system performance and power efficiency with the optimum costs for the mid-range mobile device market.

The new technology is expected to support ARM Artisan physical IP platform and POP IP for the Cortex-A9 processor, which is available on Globalfoundries 28nm-SLP.

According to the company, the Globalfoundries 28nm-SLP process technology and associated ARM POP IP for the Cortex-A12 processor allows about 70% better performance and two times better power efficiency compared to the Cortex-A9 processor using 40nm process technology.

ARM Physical IP Division, executive VP and general manager, Dipesh Patel, said that the company is delivering an optimised system application with the Cortex-A12 processor and suite of IP.

"The POP IP solution on Globalfoundries 28nm-SLP helps designers balance the performance, power and cost tradeoffs to achieve their targets for this growing market," Patel said.

The Cortex-A12 processor is claimed to offer 40% performance uplift and direct upgrade path compared to Cortex-A9 processor and also supports the big-LITTLE processing technology with the Cortex-A7 processor.
