Global PC shipments totaled 84.3 million units in the first quarter of 2010, an increase of 27.4% from the same period last year, according to preliminary results by Gartner.

HP gained the top spot in worldwide PC shipments, accounting for 18.2% of the total market share, even though its growth was below worldwide average during the quarter. Acer had strong shipment growth across all regions with 54.3%, accounting for 14.2% of market share.

Dell gained the third spot with PC shipments increasing 21.4%, representing 12.1% market share, while Lenovo gained fourth spot 8.3% market share. Asus and Toshiba captured 5.5% and 5.5% of the total market share, respectively.

Lenovo’s PC shipments increased 59.2% in the first quarter of 2010, while Asus gained the place in worldwide top 5 ranking for the first time, sharing the position with Toshiba.

In the US, PC shipments totaled 17.4 million units, an increase of 20.2 % from the first quarter of 2009. HP gained top position in the US market, while Dell retained the second spot 23.4% market share. Acer, Toshiba and Apple accounted for 15.6%, 8.6% and 8%, respectively. PC shipments in EMEA totaled 27.1 million units, a 24.8% increase from the first quarter last year.

According to the report, the markets of the UK, France and Germany performed strongly. In Asia/Pacific, PC shipments increased by 36.9% to 26.5 million units, compared to same period last year. The PC market in Latin America grew 35.4%, with shipments reaching 7.2 million units in the first quarter of 2010. The Japan PC market also registered a 14.7% growth from the same period last year.

Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, said: Although the first quarter is not typically a strong quarter for the consumer market, growth in the consumer segment was strong. We are expecting about 30% growth in the US consumer PC market in the first quarter of 2010. The positive economic outlook and affordable system prices drove U.S. consumers to buy more PCs.”
