Global server revenue grew 14.3% to $11.1bn in the second quarter of 2010, compared to the same period last year, while Global server shipments increased by 27.1% to 2,145,039 units for the second quarter of 2010, according to a study by Gartner.
Of the top five global vendors, HP, Dell, and Fujitsu grew in revenue for the quarter, while IBM and Oracle posted declines, the report said.
HP held the highest market share in revenue with 32%, a lead of 4.3% over second-place IBM, while IBM server vendor revenue decreased 2.7% to $3.1bn, compared to same quarter last year.
Dell gained the third spot with a market share of 16.3%, followed by Oracle and Fujitsu with market share 8.41% and 3.2%, respectively.
In server shipments, HP retained the top spot with a market share of 30% in the second quarter of 2010, as its server shipments increased 23.3% to 644,172 compared to same period last year, while Dell held the second spot with 25.3% market share, followed by IBM and Fujitsu with 12.5% and 2.8% share, respectively.
Gartner research vice president Jeffrey Hewitt said that as in the first quarter, the second quarter again demonstrated strong year-on-year growth; and there remained some regional variations, but all geographies demonstrated improving market conditions.
"x86-based servers grew 28.9% in units in the second quarter and 37.0% in revenues, while RISC/Itanium Unix servers remained constrained, with declines of 16.5% in shipments and decreases of 8.8% in vendor revenues, compared to the same quarter last year," Hewitt said.
"The ‘other’ CPU category, which is primarily mainframes, fell 22.8% in revenues for the quarter."
