Global desktop and notebook PC shipments decline in Q2

Apple was the top PC vendor in Q2.

By CBR Staff Writer

Worldwide shipments of desktop and notebook PCs decreased by 7.4% and 13.9% respectively in the second quarter of 2013, a report from Canalys has revealed.

The research firm however believes that tablets will outsell notebooks by the end of the year.

PC shipments in EMEA declined by 3% year-on-year in Q2 and shipments in the Asia Pacific region fell 0.5% to just over 40 million units.

Canalys said Asia Pacific region was badly affected by slow shipments in China, which accounted for about 45% of the region’s shipments and declined by around 6%.

Demand for smart phones and tablets is increasing globally, while channel partners are exercising caution when planning and placing orders thanks to industry transition.

Apple was the top PC vendor in Q2, with a 4.5 million unit followed by Lenovo, HP and Samsung.

Apple’s share slipped to 17.1% from 19.4% in Q2 last year due to an annual decrease in iPad, desktop and notebook shipments that accounted for around 20% of the company’s total PC shipments.

Canalys said Lenovo gained market share from its notebook, tablet and desktop categories thanks to 34% growth in the EMEA region, 28% growth in the US and 93% in Latin America.

The research firm noted that Lenovo shipped around 1.5 million tablets in Q2.

Canalys analyst James Wang said: "Lenovo is on an upward curve with its tablets, expanding in mainland China and Latin America, where there is little competition from the likes of Google or Amazon."

Canalys research analyst Pin-Chen Tang said: "HP has a broad enterprise portfolio, channel relationships and global reach that others still cannot match. To increase its market share it should look to leverage its strengths in the enterprise to advance Android in business."

Android’s share of the total PC market increased to 17% in Q2 from 6% a year ago.
