Global chip sales up 32.6% in August: SIA

All regions register increased numbers compared to July 2010

Worldwide semiconductor sales were up by 1.8% to $25.7bn in August, 2010, compared to $25.2bn in July, 2010, according to latest updates from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

Sales were 32.6% higher in August 2010, compared to $19.4bn in August 2009.

According to the SIA Global Sales Report, sales in Asia Pacific region rose by 32.8% to $13.68bn from $10.30bn in the same period last year, while sales in Japan rose by 19.8% to $4.04bn from $3.37bn.

For Americas and Europe regions, sales rose by 47.1% and 29.8% to $4.84bn and $3.13bn, respectively.

Sales in all regions increased when compared to July 2010. Sales in Asia Pacific region were up by 1.4%, Americas by 2.0%, Europe by 0.1% and Japan up by 4.1%.

Sales for the first eight months of 2010 were $194.6bn compared to $134.7bn for the like period of 2009, an increase of 44.4%. All monthly sales numbers represent a three-month moving average.

SIA President Brian Toohey said, semiconductor sales have been strong with August marking the sixth consecutive month of sequential growth.

"PC and wireless related products along with infrastructure expansion in emerging markets, particularly in China and India, continue to drive sales," Toohey said.

"We remain confident in our $290.5bn forecast, which represents 28.4% annual growth for 2010."
