A glitch has affected about 150,000 Gmail users, with their e-mail, attachments, applications, contact and chat logs, all erased by the bug.

The glitch first surfaced on Sunday afternoon as thousands of users started complaining on message boards about missing data.

The company has confirmed the problem. Initial estimates were that 0.23% of all users were affected, but Google has revised the figure down to 0.08%.

Google has explained the measures it was taking to address the problem on its Apps Status Dashboard. It said engineers were working to restore full access and affected users may be temporarily unable to sign in while the repair is on.

The search engine company said it is still trying to fix the problem.

A Google worker’s message said, "We’re looking into this issue right now. I know how important your messages are to you. Thanks for reporting on the forum."
