GigaTrend Inc, the Carlsbad, California-based US end of the German GigaTape GmbH digital audio tape storage device pioneer, has added the Super SafeDat, a 5Gb 4mm digital audio tape drive for the IBM AS/400. It fits all processors, 9402 to 9406 models and implements GigaTrend’s Non-Stop Streaming feature, which enables the tape drive to decrease its start-stop time dramatically with a corresponding increase in performance, achieving back-up rates of up to 1Gb per hour. On B10, B20 or C10 to C25 models, the Super SafeDat has to be daisy-chained to the existing IBM 9346 cartridge drive. On the AS/400 B30 models and above, it is connected directly via the 2601 feature, and in either case uses the standard back-up and restore commands in the OS/400 operating system; prices for the AS/400 Super SafeDat go from $15,950.
