The combination of 3G services and Nissan’s in-car electronics expertise could prove a strong one. DoCoMo’s 3G network allows subscribers to download multimedia content such as video and movies.
This service may be of limited use in the short term. At present, DoCoMo’s network only covers a small geographical area of Japan – and current 3G handsets cannot use 2G networks. It would be highly frustrating for customers if their navigation system cut out as they reached Tokyo’s city limits.
However, as dual-mode and multi-mode handsets launch later this year, the impact of this problem will be much reduced.
