Genie introduces instant messaging service

mmO2's mobile Internet business, Genie, has launched an instant messaging service, called Genie IM. The service will allow users to hold conversations in real-time via mobile phone or personal computer. In the UK, instant messaging is currently restricted to PC-to-PC communication.

Genie IM will enable users to see when their contacts are online and allow two-way communication via the web on their PC or WAP phone. The service can operate on both conventional GSM and high-speed GPRS networks, and is available only to BT Cellnet customers.

In addition, Genie has begun to trial multimedia messaging services. This service will permit a combination of text, sounds, images and video to be send and received as a single message.
