Electronic Data Systems Corp, Dallas wants to seal an alliance with a telecommunications partner, and parent General Motors Corp isn’t ruling out a sale or spin-off of the company to achieve it, EDS chairman Lester Alberthal told the Wall Street Journal. We have lots on the burner, Alberthal said: When it’s cooked is the key. General Motors executive vice-president Harry Pearce said that EDS is talking to a number of communications companies, including AT&T Co and wouldn’t rule out anything. The automaker bought EDS in 1984 for $2,500m and the unit’s stock is now worth about $16,000m; profits last year were $635.5m.EDS needs a communications partner because more customers want one company that can put together an integrated network of computer and communication systems, which was why it held abortive talks with British Telecommunications Plc earlier this year.
