GENERAL MAGIC SOFTMODEM SPUN OFF AS ALTOCOM

By CBR Staff Writer

Now that Sunnyvale, California-based intelligent agent pioneer General Magic Inc has turned all its attentions to its Internet- based network service offering for small business professionals, it finds its SoftModem software modem doesn’t really fit in any more and has spun it out as a new company, AltoCom Inc, to be based in Mountain View. AltoCom will continue to market the SoftModem technology and will develop next-generation signal processing software. General Magic will retain an unspecified interest in the new company, take a share of the revenue stream from existing products, and non-exclusive rights to new technology developed by AltoCom. There are versions of SoftModem software for V.32 14.4Kbps and V.34 33.6Kbps modem functions.
