Now that the leading UK cable television operators have become local phone companies with some cable interests on the side, they feel no need to be constrained to behave like cable companies, and General Cable Plc yesterday said it would pay 33m pounds for Imminus Ltd. Imminus, which did 2.8m pounds pre-tax in 1996 comes with a national operator’s license, which allows General Cable to offer its speech and data services to customers outside its regional cable franchise areas. Imminus offers value-added services enabling companies to link remote personal computers and terminals UK-wide via its leased private network.
