Gemplus SA and Motorola Inc have launched a joint research program to develop and manufacture a new generation of contactless Smart Cards that are compatible with existing swipe card readers. The project, dubbed Coclico is funded under the European Union’s Esprit project, and also has the backing of the Swiss Ministry of Science & Education. It will cover the development of all elements of the system; the processor, cards, the ROM code and read-write interfaces.
