The agreement calls for the supply and personalization of the cards and direct mailing to the end-user. The four-year contract will come into force on January 1, 2007 and includes an option for two additional years. Norway currently issues approximately 250,000 driver’s licenses per year.

Gemalto will supply the Norwegian Directorate of Public Roads with polycarbonate cards that implement highly secure printing features such as micro-text, UV-sensitive ink and rainbow printing. Furthermore, the cards will be personalized locally in Norway using laser engraving.

This new contract win reinforces Gemalto’s position in the field of driver’s license and vehicle registration. The company has already completed deployments in El Salvador, Finland and India. Additionally, Gemalto has provided secure documents and solutions for tachograph programs in France, Spain, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Denmark, which aim to make roads safer.
