GEC Plessey Telecommunications Ltd is supplying UKP200,000 of its Telepoint equipment to Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems to conduct trials in Philadelphia over the US cellular network. Despite GEC Plessey’s championing of the common air interface standard designed to enable one vendor’s handsets to operate with another’s base stations – the first US trial will take place over the 891MHz to 894MHz frequency allotted by the Federal Communications Commission – somewhat higher than the common air interface’s usual 864MHz to 868MHz range. The tests are due to start next January and will last for three to six months.
