GEC PLESSEY DATA SYSTEMS BRINGS IN SCANDINAVIAN SCANET TO CRACK UK MARKET

By CBR Staff Writer

It is still early days for GPT Data Systems in its attempt to make an impact on the UKP300m a year UK local area network market, but general manager Martin Taylor reckons it is on to a winner with its choice of Dataco A/S’s ScaNet range of networking products, on exhibition at Networks ’90. According to GPT, over 1,200 ScaNet systems have already been installed throughout Europe, using Open Systems Interconnection protocols to support IBM, DEC and Unix environments; ScaNet also supports the GOSIP subset of OSI standards for government use. GPT Data intends to use the ScaNet range in conjunction with its own X25 devices, modems multiplexers, network access and management products to offer integrated communication systems and system redesign to companies that have 500 and more employees. Taylor says his small team has already started talking to a few potential customers, and any deals that result will be announced in due course; in the meantime, GPT Data has one organisation that is particularly to be practised upon: GEC Plessey itself.
