GEC Plc is once again the most prominent company in the New Year Honours List with a total of four recipients – three to Marconi managers, the fourth outside the scope of Computergram. The highest award goes to Colin Gaskell, managing director of GEC’s Marconi Instruments Ltd, who becomes a CBE. Dennis Amor, artillery products group manager at Marconi Command & Control Systems Ltd, and John Carter, systems department manager at Marconi Space Systems Ltd are both made MBEs. John Parsons, chairman and chief executive of Time Data Systems International Ltd and a member of the British Overseas Trade Board is created a CBE. The OBE goes to Frank Benson, lately head of the Electronic & Electrical Engineering Department at Sheffield University. John Clark of Horsham, West Sussex gets an OBE for services to the telecommunications industry. There are also MBEs for Mrs Helen Gonella, who supervises the Text Processing Centre at the South of Scotland Electricity Board; to Miss Diana Lavender, lately CAD/CAM Controller at the Air Weapons Division of British Aerospace Plc; James McLachlan, head of exchange maintenance at British Telecommunications Plc, Northern Ireland District; David Rees, director of the Microlectronics Education Unit for Wales; Donald Shires, personnel manager at Thorn EMI Electronics Ltd; and Lieutentant Commander James Stewart RN retired, lately area marketing manager, STC Submarine Systems Ltd, for services to export.
