GCT Semiconductor, a supplier of mobile WiMAX offering, and WhizNets, a provider of embedded wireless networking services, has completed Android-based mobile platform with WiMAX connectivity. WhizNets also unveiled a VOIP offering for GCT’s WiMAX Android platform.

GCT’s WiMAX drivers are integrated with the standard Android framework. The integration of a common WiMAX API for interface control, and a connection manager, makes it a completely integrated service for ODM/OEMs interested in building Android-based WiMAX devices. In addition, WhizNets’ integration of the VOIP stack on this WiMAX Android platform allows ODMs to serve both voice and data needs over a WiMAX connection.

The companies said that the Android platform is powered by GCT’s GDM7205 (for 2.3GHz and 2.5GHz), GDM7213 (for 3.5GHz), or GDM7215 (WiMAX+WiFi). These single-chip, integrated devices minimise the number of external RF front-end components, while also including a mobile WiMAX baseband with high performance dual-processors, and an array of peripherals for connectivity.

Atul Garg, CEO of WhizNets, said: “We’ve created a complete ecosystem dedicated to mobile Android VoIP over WiMAX by collaborating with the leading WiMAX chipset maker, GCT, in order to offer the most matured WiMAX solutions and Android system/devices integration services to OEM/ODM’s and operators. Our goal is to accelerate integration of WIMAX in mobile platforms to get new products to market efficiently and effectively.”
