GAZA, WESTBANK TO GET OWN TELEPHONE COUNTRY CODE

By CBR Staff Writer

The areas of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank where the Palestinians have self-rule have now been granted an international telephone country code – but they don’t actually have a phone system yet: the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau has made a temporary reservation of country code 970 for Palestine, but all calls to Palestinians currently go through Israel, country code 972. Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Authority will soon approach Israel about establishing a network for the West Bank and Gaza Strip separate from Bezeq Israel Telecommunications Ltd.
