GATEWAY TEAMS WITH YAHOO ON CUSTOM WEB PAGES

By CBR Staff Writer

Portal star Yahoo Inc has agreed to provide co-branded, personalized web pages to gateway.net, the troubled internet service from PC manufacturer Gateway. From Friday, February 5, certain Gateway systems will be sold with the Gateway My Yahoo! start page as the default home page for gateway.net subscribers. Gateway claims to have been the first direct PC marketer to form a nationwide ISP, which is a little disingenuous. For nearly two years, Gateway farmed the service off to Web America Networks (WAN) Inc. That relationship ended in acrimony only a few weeks ago, when Gateway switched to MCI Worldcom’s UUNet division. WAN sued for breach of contract, and Gateway was forced to apologize to customers when the legal action disrupted service (CI No 3,583).
