Irvine, California-based Gateway, the third-largest PC maker in the US, has a deal with China’s biggest electronics distributor, Digital China Holdings, to help it push beyond its home market.

The company already sells PCs in Canada, the UK, France, Japan and Mexico.

But just a small fraction, or less than 10%, of its retail sales are from outside the US, where the company faces intense competition from market leader Hewlett-Packard and Dell.

Gateway said it had modified its US-model PCs for the Chinese market, including Chinese language keyboards.
