GATEWAY 2000 FIRES 130 AS IT TRIES TO GET TO GRIPS WITH OSBORNE BUY

By CBR Staff Writer

Gateway 2000 Inc, North Sioux City, South Dakota is finding Australia something of a kangaroo’s graveyard after acquiring bankrupt Osborne Computer Corp, and it says it will eliminate about 130 positions in reorganizing its sales and service operations. It is closing a number of the remaining Osborne retail outlets in Australia and is retaining Wang Australia Ltd to provide on-site service. It will also move to direct selling and support via telephone. After the shake-up, it will employ about 200 in Australian sales, marketing, operations, administrative, customer service and support. The company says it will not have to take any charges for the actions.
